Understanding Heel Bursitis

Heel pain is one of the most common reasons people visit a podiatrist, and it can make daily activities like work and exercise almost impossible. One source of heel pain is heel bursitis. This can occur when either the bursa sac of fluid that attaches the Achilles tendon and the calcaneal tendon becomes inflamed (known as retrocalcaneal bursitis), or the padding under the heel begins to degenerate because of trauma (known as subcutaneous calcaneal bursitis). Heel pain can have a variety of causes and can affect anyone. If you are struggling with heel pain, consulting with a podiatrist can be extremely beneficial. A podiatrist will be able to properly diagnose and treat the source of the pain.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Terri Quebedeaux, DPM of Agave Podiatry . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Heel Stretches for the Sole

The plantar fascia is a ligament that runs along the bottom of each foot, connecting the heel bone to the toes. When this ligament is injured or inflamed, the result is usually heel and arch pain. One way to prevent or relieve tension and pain in the heel, arch, and sole of the foot is by stretching. To stretch the plantar fascia and relieve tightness under the foot, you can do a foot pull. Sit with one leg crossed over the other, then grab all of your toes and pull them as a unit back towards your shin, until you feel a pull in the bottom of your foot. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times. To massage the plantar fascia, roll a tennis ball forward and back with the bottom of your foot for 5-10 minutes a day. To learn more about plantar fascia stretches, please consult with a podiatrist.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Terri Quebedeaux, DPM from Agave Podiatry . Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Proper Foot Care for Diabetic Feet

Diabetic patients are often aware of the link between foot problems and how their diabetes is managed. Complications can include a numbing sensation or tingling in the feet which may be the beginning of diabetic neuropathy. It may cause the inability to feel existing cuts, wounds, or bruises. If these ailments are left untreated, a diabetic ulcer may form, which may lead to amputation. Additionally, foot muscles may be affected in severely diabetic patients, which may change the alignment of the foot. Proper foot care management can begin with monitoring the glucose levels in the blood. A daily practice of good foot hygiene can consist of washing and drying the feet thoroughly, and special footwear may need to be worn. If you have diabetes, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to properly manage this condition, in addition to providing you with proper foot care advice.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact Terri Quebedeaux, DPM from Agave Podiatry . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.

Listen to What Your Feet May Be Telling You

Sore feet may sometimes be indicative of an underlying health issue and should not be ignored. If the muscles in your feet cannot relax properly and therefore cramp, this may be an indicator of dehydration, nerve or circulation issues, or possibly even neurological conditions. A foot sore that does not heal can sometimes signal the presence of diabetes. If your feet and toes are always cold, you may have hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), or poor circulation which may be the result of any number of health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and more. Arthritis often presents itself first in small joints such as those in the toes. If you notice any soreness or pain in your feet, an examination by a podiatrist is the first step in helping to determine the underlying cause.

The Education of a Podiatrist

The area of the body that podiatrists treat are the feet, and sometimes the ankle too. They are specialists that are qualified in correcting disorders of the feet, and are defined as foot specialists. Some podiatrists may choose to practice a specific form of podiatry, including sports medicine, pediatrics, or diabetic foot care. Mandatory education consists of obtaining a bachelor's degree, followed by completing a four year program in a podiatric medical school. Additionally, there are many states that require completing a two year residency program as this can provide hands on experience with various medical and surgery practices. If you are considering a career in podiatry, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can enlighten you on the daily procedures of podiatry.

If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Feel free to contact Terri Quebedeaux, DPM from Agave Podiatry . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.
